I went to go see the University Dance Theatre Fall Concert 2014. The whole play was wonderful, and well thought out. I know the dancers practiced a lot because I did not see any of them mess up in their performances. This is the second dance play I have ever been to in my entire life, so I was kind of skeptical. I thought it would be a waste of twelve dollars, but it turned out to be worth every penny. It actual put the idea of me dancing in a play in my head.
One of the two dances that caught my eyes was Saudade. The dance caught my eyes because when it started it seem that the dancer was crazy. There was only one dancer in the act it was a female, and she wore a black dress with undergarments on. She started out the play sitting in one of the two chairs that was on stage. The scene opens up by her leaning forward, and backward in a psychotic way. As the play progressed she stood up and fell to her knees then through head onto the second chair with force. She would then lie there for 10 seconds. The move was repeated several times. The play was an ABA structure because it felt like it was going in patterns, and a sense of continuity. It made me think of suicide or someone torturing themselves because of a bad breakup. In the song there was bird chirping and a screeching noise, it was very intense. The mood of the dance changed from beginning to in because at the dancer was in a mind state of depression then as it goes on it resemble someone that has freed themselves from harm, and they become a happy person, so at the end it was more of a relief mood. At the beginning I thought the dance was going to be pointless, but I started to get theme of it before it was over. The dance got so good to the where I had to remember she was acting it out and is not crazy. I think the meaning of the theme was very powerful. I could be mistaking, but to me the theme showed power. It showed that you can conquer anything you put the effort to it, and that we are trapped in a world that we should overcome. The color of her dress was black, and black relates to being hidden, being secretive and unknown. It relates to things bottled up, and hidden from the world.
The second play I wrote about is what is it. The structure of the dance is Narrative because the dance told about a couples relationship that had good and bad times, but sometimes there was also to much pride and it broke them down even more. I knew from the beginning of the play that it was going to be great and tell a story that could be a lesson to many couples. There was 8 people, 3 males an five females. The mood of the play was very soft and light. Although the play showed the couples arguing I felt that they arguing came from loving each other. It was at times where they wanted to leave but the partner would put away their pride and pull them back together. The dance also showed how when the couple broke up they would go back to their friends like everything was fine. Soon as they come across the person again it’s like they reminisce the good times they had and want each other back, and as time goes by they remember why they broke up. The songs were also similar and differnt. They gave the message that I want to be with you through no matter what. One is giving a message stating that I will have your back no matter what, and one is the opposite asking if you will stand by me but including that he will forever be hers faithfully. The couples once lay beside each other, and they look happy because they had each other by their side and they were by each other through whatever. They dressed up in a casual way, and the primarily colors for there outfits were red. The color red symbolize love, anger, seduction, and violence. The play was based on love and anger. They did not have any props, but the lighting during this play seemed brighter than the rest to me.
They play turned out to be wonderful. There were many plays I would have like to choose, but these two stood out to me the most. It’s like these two plays touched my heart, and I really felt what was going on. I went from being skeptical to understanding the themes. I felt all the dancers been practicing for a while because they really put there all into the dance to make the crowd see the inner meanings of their masterpieces. I can most definitely connect with the dance What It Is because I know how relationships are and that dance showed them in 3rd person, and also giving the audience a reality check saying that we need to learn relationships aren’t going to be easy but if we stick by each other we will one day get on the correct path.
